Does your company deliver a positive candidate experience for your job applicants?
I recently read a report that estimates nearly 60% of job applicants share their candidate experience with others, including network colleagues and friends. The candidate experience is a big deal to job applicants, whether or not they are chosen for the role. Therefore, word of mouth on a company’s candidate experience can also impact its overall ability to attract top talent.
In my line of work, I have seen and heard about the very good and the very bad candidate experiences. Companies that prioritize a positive candidate experience also will often excel in other areas, including employee retention and engagement. Conversely, companies that do not deliver a positive candidate experience usually have lower retention and engagement rates.
Six Places to Focus
Want to create a positive candidate experience in your hiring processes? Based on my observations, here are six places to focus:
1. Create a “frictionless” application process, make it easy for the candidate to apply
2. Incorporate technology and calendar tools to simplify the scheduling of interviews
3. Make communication a priority, provide the applicant with timely updates at all stages
4. Leverage behavioral assessments to dramatically reduce the number of interviews
5. Drop the cover letter requirement
6. Give the candidate a clear explanation of the company’s mission, culture, and values
Delivering a positive candidate experience for job applicants will yield immediate and long-term benefits for your company.
